Key points
- Choose 3 cups for white-rice batches up to 3 rice cups; choose 5.5 cups for larger batches.
- One rice cup is 180mL of uncooked rice. At 165g per meal, 3 cups make about 6 meals.
- Count the portions you will store and measure the space with the lid open before buying.
Choose a 3-cup rice cooker in Japan if your usual white-rice batch is 3 rice cups or less; choose 5.5 cups if you need more in one cook. The size describes uncooked rice measured with a 180mL rice cup, so your portions and cooking schedule matter more than how many people live with you. If you are unsure, start with the 3-cup Zojirushi NP-GM05-XT unless your meal plan needs a larger batch.

What does a rice-cooker cup mean in Japan?
In Japanese shops, you will see 3合 and 5.5合. The character 合 means go, the rice measure behind the English word “cup” on these cookers. One rice cup is about 180mL. It measures dry rice before cooking, not a bowl of cooked rice or the amount of water to add.
That is smaller than a US measuring cup, which is about 240mL. Three US cups hold about 720mL; three rice cups hold 540mL. Using your usual kitchen cup could therefore put roughly 4 rice cups into a cooker built for 3.
Use the cup supplied with the cooker. Measure the rice first, then use the correct water line inside the pot for that rice and menu. Zojirushi's manual explains this method. Filling to the “3” water line does not turn an oversized measure of rice into a correct 3-cup batch.
How many meals will 3 or 5.5 cups make?
For a useful estimate, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture uses about 330g of cooked rice from 1 go. Actual weight changes with the rice and water. If your portion is 165g, that gives about two meals per rice cup.
Uncooked rice per batch | Approximate cooked weight | Portions at 165g each | Capacity that fits this white-rice batch |
|---|---|---|---|
0.5 rice cup | 165g | 1 | Either size |
1 rice cup | 330g | 2 | Either size |
3 rice cups | 990g | 6 | 3 cups or 5.5 cups |
3.5 rice cups | 1,155g | 7 | 5.5 cups |
5.5 rice cups | 1,815g | 11 | 5.5 cups |
These are portion examples, not a rule about how much you should eat. If you prefer a 250g portion, a full 3-cup batch gives roughly four portions instead of six. The same cooker can therefore suit one person's weekly routine and leave another person cooking again midweek.
You can work backwards: number of portions × grams per portion ÷ 330 = rice cups needed. For seven dinners at 165g each, the estimate is 3.5 rice cups. A 3-cup cooker cannot make that whole batch at once. For four lunches at the same portion size, the estimate is only 2 cups.
Which size fits your cooking routine?
Choose 3 cups for smaller batches or regular cooking
If you cook 0.5–1 cup for dinner, or prepare up to six 165g portions at once, the 3-cup size covers that white-rice plan. It also leaves less depth to find on a small kitchen shelf. You can still cook for two: two 165g portions need about 1 rice cup, not a full 3-cup pot.
Already own a working 3-cup cooker? If it handles your regular batch, keep it. An occasional guest meal does not automatically justify replacing it. A larger cooker becomes useful when splitting batches is a repeated problem in your week.
Choose 5.5 cups when one larger cook solves a real problem
If you want all seven 165g dinners from one weekend cook, choose 5.5 cups. A 3-cup model means either two batches or another cook later in the week. If you eat rice at lunch and dinner, count both meals rather than treating “one person” as a fixed serving size.
A solo cook writing in 2025 found a 3-cup cooker inconvenient because eating rice three times daily meant cooking every two days. Another owner's account describes the burden of portioning leftovers from a 5-cup cooker. These experiences point to different routines; they do not compare the two Zojirushi models here.
Before choosing the bigger size, count where the extra portions will go. A full 5.5-cup batch gives about eleven example portions. If you eat one now, you have ten to store. Put your empty containers in the freezer to see whether they fit. Extra cooking capacity helps only if you can handle the extra rice.
Will it fit when you open the lid?
The 3-cup NP-GM05 and 5.5-cup NV-KA10 are both about 23cm wide. Their main space differences are behind and above the cooker:
- NP-GM05: about 30cm deep and 19cm tall when closed; about 36cm tall with the lid open.
- NV-KA10: about 35cm deep and 20cm tall when closed; about 40.5cm tall with the lid open.
These dimensions apply to these models, not every cooker of the same capacity. A shelf can fit the closed body while blocking the lid. You also need space to lift out the inner pot and keep steam away from nearby surfaces, following the model's placement instructions. The lid-open height is not a complete allowance for safe installation.
Measure the shelf depth and the open space above it together. On a sliding shelf, allow for the position used during cooking, not just the position used to store the appliance.
What does the smaller model cost?
On October 14, 2026, Zojirushi's official Japanese store listed the NP-GM05-XT at JPY 26,180 and the NV-KA10-BA at JPY 30,580, both including tax. The difference was JPY 4,400. These are official-store reference prices; Amazon Japan prices, sellers, and stock can differ.
Paying more for capacity makes sense when it removes a regular second batch. If you mainly cook one or two portions, capacity alone gives you little reason to spend the difference. Both models officially allow white-rice batches as small as 0.5 cup; neither requires a full pot each time.
If your plan is up to six 165g portions per batch, and you have room for a 30cm-deep body and a lid reaching about 36cm, the NP-GM05-XT fits. Use its JPY 26,180 official-store price as a reference, then compare the exact model and current offer on Amazon Japan.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Treating every menu as a 3-cup menu. The NP-GM05 manual allows 0.5–3 cups for plain white rice, but only 0.5–2 cups for mixed rice with added ingredients and for brown rice. If those are your regular meals, choose by their limits rather than the number on the box.
- Buying an overseas model with a familiar brand name. NP-GM05-XT is a Japanese domestic model designed for AC100V use in Japan. An overseas 120V cooker with a similar name is a different purchase. This model's buttons are in Japanese; the official manual shows their labels. Do not assume the linked model has an English control panel.
- Reading “three cups” as three meals. Your bowl size changes the answer. Use the portion calculation above, then match it to how often you want to cook.
- Buying capacity you cannot store. Decide how many portions you will eat and store before filling a larger pot. If four portions are all you can handle, make that batch even when the cooker holds more.
- Replacing a cooker before identifying the bottleneck. If the problem is a cramped freezer or a shelf that blocks the lid, extra rice capacity will not fix it. Choose the size that works with your meals, storage, and kitchen together.
