Key points
- Choose Shin Kanzen Master if you understand the passage but still choose wrong answers without a time limit.
- Choose revised So-matome if you can explain your answers without a timer and want a daily plan with English support.
- If words and grammar block the passage itself, review those gaps first. Start with one reading book, not both sets.
Choose Shin Kanzen Master for JLPT N2 reading if you understand the passage but still choose wrong answers without a time limit. Its lessons make you compare the passage with each answer choice, which helps when knowing the words is not enough. Choose revised So-matome if you can explain the right answer without a timer and want a daily plan with English support; if the passage itself is unclear, review the words and grammar first.

Find out whether the problem is meaning or time
You might read work messages in Japanese every day and still struggle with N2 reading. A familiar message gives you clues from the situation. A test asks you to choose the answer supported by a short passage, even when another choice sounds reasonable.
Before buying, try an unfamiliar reading question from the free official JLPT samples. Work without a timer, without translating the whole passage, and without looking at the answer first. Write one short reason for your choice. Then check the answer.
Use what happened to choose your next step:
- You understood the passage but chose the wrong answer. Choose Shin Kanzen Master if you can follow its Japanese explanations. Work on the link between the writer's point and the choices.
- You got it right and can show why, but took too long. Choose revised So-matome if a daily sequence and English support will help you keep studying. Add timed practice as well.
- You could not follow the sentences. Return to the unclear words and grammar in your current materials first. A new reading book cannot remove that work.
A lucky guess belongs in the first group, not the second. Repeat this check with a few different passages before spending money; one easy question can hide a weak spot. If your current book already explains the errors well, keep using it.
Compare the two reading volumes, not the whole series
These are separate reading books. Neither purchase includes a full set of vocabulary, grammar, kanji, and listening materials.
What matters | Shin Kanzen Master N2 Reading | Expanded and revised So-matome N2 Reading |
|---|---|---|
Best fit here | Wrong choices even with enough time | Correct untimed answers; a daily routine helps |
Study structure | Sections for text structure and question skills | A six-week reading course |

Practice and answers | 33 examples, 70 practice items, one mock test; explained answers | Two mock tests; revised series adds explanation and review support |
Paper volume | 197 pages plus a 39-page answer booklet | 124 pages plus a 20-page booklet |
Publisher list price, tax included | JPY 1,540 | JPY 1,430 |
Prices are the publishers' Japanese paper-book list prices, checked October 14, 2026. Amazon Japan's selling price and delivery charges may differ. The gap is only JPY 110, so study fit matters more than the cheaper cover price.
So-matome also teaches reading techniques. The choice is about how you work through the lessons, not whether only one book teaches a method.
Choose Shin Kanzen Master when answer choices fool you
Shin Kanzen's official sample shows the work clearly. Its opening lesson on contrast asks you to read a passage, then maps the two sides of the comparison. The explanation gives reasons for accepting or rejecting each answer.
That is useful if you often pick a true detail that does not answer the question. Mark the sentence that supports your choice. Then find the word or claim that makes each other choice fail. Keep your notes short: you are learning to use evidence, not writing a full translation.
One learner in a June 2025 N2 discussion described choosing answers based on what could be implied, rather than what was actually written. That is a helpful example of the error this practice can address. It does not prove how much anyone's score will rise.
The instruction in the sample is Japanese, including the explanation of wrong choices. If you need to translate every line of that explanation, start with support from your current class or materials. The book's reputation will not make those sentences easier to read.
If wrong choices remain even without a timer and you can follow Japanese explanations, choose this reading volume at the publisher's list price of JPY 1,540 including tax. It contains 103 examples and practice items in total, plus a mock test; the Amazon Japan button is for this one book.
Choose revised So-matome when a daily plan helps you practise
So-matome suits you when you can already explain an untimed answer but need a steady routine. After work, a clear next lesson can be easier to start than deciding which skill to practise.
Buy the expanded and revised N2 Reading volume released in August 2023. This comparison uses the English, Chinese, and Korean version. Its English support can help you study, but do the Japanese question before using a translation. Otherwise, you may practise understanding the English more than reading the Japanese.
ASK's general series description says eight weeks. Its reading-volume release notice, and this volume's cover, say six weeks. Use the reading book's plan. Those weeks describe a course structure, not how long every learner will need or a promise of passing.
Older reviews remain useful for hearing where learners struggled, but they describe earlier materials. Inhae's 2019 comparison, for example, separates preparing to read a passage from learning to answer test questions. It predates this revision and cannot establish what the current answer booklet contains. Choose English support for help starting and reviewing; do not expect a complete English explanation of every passage.
If you can explain correct answers without a timer and want a daily route with English support, choose the revised reading volume at JPY 1,430 including tax, the publisher's list price. The six-week course and two mock tests are for this N2 Reading volume, not a five-book bundle.
Make a plan that includes checking mistakes
Start with a 30-minute study session: try the questions, read the explanation, then write what made your answer right or wrong. If the explanation takes most of the session, reduce the number of new questions. Review is part of the session, not extra work you hope to fit in later.
For Shin Kanzen, doing two examples or practice items per session would take 52 sessions to cover all 103. That is a planning estimate, not the publisher's schedule. Mock tests and later review need more time, and two items may be too much for a difficult lesson. With little time left, practise the sections linked to your errors first.
For So-matome, setting aside 30 minutes every day for six weeks gives you 21 hours. That is your time budget, not a measured completion time. Leave room for missed days and reviewing errors; a printed daily plan does not guarantee that each lesson fits your evening.
Use quiet time at home for new passages and answer explanations. A train ride can work for rereading a passage you have already checked. Once your reasons are sound, use unfamiliar questions for timed practice. Remembering yesterday's answer does not show how fast you can read a new text.
Avoid the mistakes that waste a good book
Buying both full sets at once. In a 2024 discussion, one So-matome user reported stopping after trying several volumes together. Another reported passing with the series. These accounts point to different workloads and learners, not a universal winner. Start with the reading volume that addresses your problem.
Counting a finished page as a fixed mistake. Before moving on, name the sentence you misread or the unsupported claim you accepted. Repeating the same guess faster will not help.
Buying the wrong version in Japan. Match N2 and Reading, shown as 読解 on the cover. For So-matome, match the expanded and revised English-support version shown here. Check that a used copy includes its answer booklet. Neither an N3 book nor an N2 grammar book is the product compared above.
Start with an unfamiliar question and your reason for answering it. If that reason is wrong even with enough time, Shin Kanzen is the better fit, provided you can read its explanations. If your reason is sound and you need a routine, choose revised So-matome and protect time for review.
