Electric Blankets in Japan: Underblanket or Throw?

Choose an underblanket for bed use, or an over/under blanket to cover yourself too. Compare Japanese labels, sizes, cord reach, running costs, and washing.

Key points

  1. Choose DB-U13T-C for bed use only if its size and short controller cord fit your setup.
  2. Choose DB-R32M-C to cover yourself too, or when you need more fabric or a longer controller cord.
  3. These blankets warm your body and bedding; preheat the bed, then switch off or lower the heat for sleep.

For bed use only, choose the Panasonic DB-U13T-C underblanket if its size and controller cord fit; to cover yourself too, choose the DB-R32M-C over/under blanket. These blankets warm your body and bedding rather than the room, so where you put them matters more than the word “electric.” A Japanese shiki blanket is for use underneath you, so choose kakeshiki if you want to use it like a heated throw.

For bed use only, choose DB-U13T-C if 140 × 80 cm of fabric and a 0.46 m controller cord fit. For over-body use, more fabric, or a longer controller cord, choose DB-R32M-C: 188 × 137 cm and 0.97 m. Keep the controller outside bedding.
Choose by use, fabric size, and controller reach. Fabric dimensions are not the heated area.

Read “shiki” and “kakeshiki” before buying

Japanese listings often say 電気しき毛布, or denki shiki moufu. That means an electric underblanket. The DB-U13T-C belongs to this type: it goes beneath you in the bedding setup shown in its instructions.

電気かけしき毛布, or denki kakeshiki moufu, means a blanket for both over-body and under-body use. The DB-R32M-C belongs to this type. Here, “throw” describes using it over your body; it is not the model's official product name or a promise that every blanket sold as a throw can go underneath you.

This distinction matters if you are used to putting a heated blanket over your knees. An under-only model does not become an over-body blanket because the English listing simply calls it an “electric blanket.” Match the Japanese use label and exact model number first.

Also decide what feels cold. If it is the bed when you get in, an underblanket targets that problem. If you are cold while sitting still, over-body use may suit you better. If you need warm air while moving around the apartment, use room heating; neither model replaces that job.

Choose by fabric size and controller reach

Both models have a dial for temperature control and a room-temperature sensor. The differences below are the ones that change where you can use them. Figures come from Panasonic's Japanese specifications, checked October 14, 2026.

The cost row uses Panasonic's test at a room temperature of 10°C and an electricity rate of JPY 31/kWh, including tax. It is a running-cost estimate, not the purchase price or your exact bill.

Measure the part of the bedding you want to cover. For example, centering the smaller blanket on a bed 100 cm wide leaves about 10 cm of uncovered bedding on each side. That can be enough for one person's body, even though it does not cover the whole mattress.

The fabric dimensions are not a map of the warm area. Panasonic says sections without heater wires do not warm up. Buying a blanket as wide as the mattress therefore does not guarantee heat from edge to edge.

Next, measure the route from the blanket's connector to a place where you can reach the dial. Keep the controller outside the bedding. Then measure from that spot to the socket; these are two separate cord lengths, not one long cord you can divide as you like.

If you only want bed use, about 140 × 80 cm covers the area you need, and a 0.46 m cord reaches the controller's place, choose the DB-U13T-C. Use the Amazon Japan button to compare its current purchase price with your budget; select the beige model with the exact DB-U13T-C code.

If you want to cover yourself too, or the smaller model will not fit, choose the DB-R32M-C. Its fabric is about 188 × 137 cm, and its 0.97 m controller cord gives more reach. Compare its current purchase price on Amazon Japan before paying for the extra size.

The larger model is useful when you will use that extra fabric or reach. If the small one already fits, buying the larger one adds more blanket to handle and dry without solving a new problem. If ordinary bedding already keeps you comfortable, keep using it.

Preheat the bed, then turn the heat down

Panasonic recommends warming the bedding about 15–30 minutes before bed, then moving the dial to off or low when you go to sleep. Its use guide shows how to orient the blanket using the arrow on the label or connector.

Useful dial words are 切 for off, 弱 for low, and 強 for high. The setting marked ダニ is for mite treatment, not for sleeping. Follow the blanket's direction marks rather than judging the head and foot ends from the pattern alone.

For a simple first routine, preheat the bedding and switch off when you get in. Your duvet or top bedding then helps hold that warmth. Leaving the dial on high while asleep is a common mistake: gentle-feeling heat can still cause a burn when it stays against the same part of your skin.

The room sensor adjusts heat when the room gets colder. It is different from a timer. Panasonic's description of stopping when a heater or control fault occurs also does not promise that the blanket will switch off after a set number of hours.

The published specifications for these two models do not establish a bedtime off-timer. If that is essential for you, choose a model whose own manual clearly lists one. A sleep mode described for another Panasonic blanket is not a feature you can assume these models share.

Spread the blanket out again each day. Keep the controller out from under your body and away from the heated fabric. Panasonic calls for extra care with babies, people who cannot adjust the heat, and people with reduced skin sensation; these products are also not for heating pets.

Treat running costs as an estimate

For two hours of use each evening, multiplying Panasonic's high-setting figures gives about JPY 60 per 30 days for the smaller model and JPY 102 for the larger one. This is an example using the same test conditions, not a forecast for your apartment.

Your temperature setting, room temperature, and electricity plan change the result. Rated power is another number: it describes the product's electrical rating. Multiplying that wattage by every hour of use assumes constant operation at that power, so it should not be presented as the actual charge.

The small difference in the manufacturer's running-cost figures is less useful than getting the placement right. A cheap-to-run underblanket is still the wrong purchase if you need over-body use. Keep the buying decision about use and fit, then compare the seller's total price including delivery.

Check your washing setup before winter

“Washable” has limits. Both blankets allow washing after you remove the controller, but Panasonic rules out drum-type washing machines, tumble dryers, and dry cleaning. A suitable non-drum machine needs a blanket-wash course and a laundry net; hand-washing is the other option.

That matters in a Japanese apartment with a washer-dryer. Owning one does not mean you can put either blanket through its normal wash-and-dry cycle. The larger blanket also needs more space to wash and hang, so include that in your choice if your drying space is small.

Unplug the blanket before washing and detach the controller. Air-dry it in a shaded, well-ventilated place, and let the connector dry fully before reconnecting. If the internal heater wires are twisted or overlapping, stop using it and arrange repair rather than trying to warm the fault away.

For daily use, a thin sheet or suitable cover can reduce dirt and pilling. Keep the controller outside the cover. Avoid waterproof sheets and bedwetting pads: Panasonic warns that they can interfere with temperature control.

Before you order, picture the whole setup: the fabric flat in its intended place, the dial within reach outside the bedding, and enough room to wash and dry it. That picture tells you whether you need a simple underblanket or the larger over/under model far better than a long feature list.
